Most of us go through life blissfully unaware of the toxins in our makeup, until we become pregnant. Then the list of do's & dont's, things you can use & things you should avoid can seem a mile long. To help you navigate this new & exciting time in your life we have created our list of 5 toxic ingredients to avoid during pregnancy for you & your baby.
1. Parabens
Parabens are chemicals commonly used as preservatives in many products, including baby and beauty products. Exposure to parabens during pregnancy can have consequences for your child's weight development. Parabens are also known to disrupt the endocrine system, which controls the hormones involved in reproduction, growth and metabolism. Make sure to avoid propyl, butyl, isopropyl, isobutyl and methyl parabens.
2. Phthalates
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and long-lasting. Phthalates are found in products with synthetic fragrances, nail polishes, plastic containers, soaps, shampoos and laundry detergent. These chemicals can disrupt the endocrine system, causing pregnant women to deliver their babies before their due date. Some studies also show that children born to mothers exposed to excessive levels of phthalates can have decreased IQ, poorer social communication development and other behavioural problems.
3. Fragrance
Most cosmetic and personal care products contain fragrances. Many synthetic chemicals in fragrances are made from petroleum-based chemicals and can be harmful to human health. Go for makeup products that are unscented or naturally scented, as fragrances can leave you feeling sick, light headed, irritated and give you a headache especially during pregnancy when your sense can be heightened.
4. Triclosan
Triclosan is often used for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, but it may decrease the levels of thyroid hormones that are essential for fetal growth and development. So this is definitely one to avoid during pregnancy.
5. Retinoids
Retinoids are a class of chemical compounds that have vitamin A by-products. Using Retinoids while pregnant may result in many effects on the developing embryo and fetus including loss of pregnancy, premature delivery and birth defects.
Pick skincare products that fight wrinkles without the retinoids like our Skin Guardian Oil.
