Mineral Sunscreen Without Titanium Dioxide: What to Look For

Sunscreen is the one place titanium dioxide isn’t hiding in the fine print — it’s listed right up the top as an active ingredient. That makes a “titanium dioxide–free” sunscreen a slightly different thing from the rest, so here’s what to look for.

There are only two mineral filters

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — that’s the entire list of mineral UV filters. So a titanium dioxide–free mineral sunscreen is simply one built on zinc oxide alone. (Chemical sunscreens don’t contain titanium dioxide either, but they’re a different category; this is about keeping things mineral.)

The check is refreshingly simple

Because titanium dioxide is an active ingredient, regulation requires it to appear in the “Active Ingredients” panel when it’s used. So your whole check is one line: does it say zinc oxide on its own, or zinc oxide and titanium dioxide? No hunting through the “other ingredients.”

Two things to watch

First, “mineral” alone doesn’t mean titanium dioxide–free — plenty of mineral sunscreens combine both, and only the actives panel settles it. Second, format matters: with some brands the lotion is zinc-only while the spray version adds titanium dioxide, so check the exact product.

A note on what we’re not claiming

Sunscreen is a regulated product, and this isn’t advice on how well anything protects you or whether it suits your skin — only on whether titanium dioxide is present. For sun-protection guidance, check the current label and talk to a pharmacist or doctor. When you’re ready to browse, our Sunscreen & SPF list in the Titanium Dioxide–Free Directory collects zinc-oxide-only options reviewed at the time of checking.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does a titanium dioxide–free mineral sunscreen contain?
There are only two mineral UV filters: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. A titanium dioxide–free mineral sunscreen uses zinc oxide on its own.
2. How do I check if a sunscreen contains titanium dioxide?
Titanium dioxide must be listed in the “Active Ingredients” panel when used. Check that line for zinc oxide on its own, with no titanium dioxide beside it. Note that a brand’s lotion may be zinc-only while its spray version adds titanium dioxide.
3. Does mineral sunscreen always contain titanium dioxide?
No. Many mineral sunscreens combine zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, but others use zinc oxide alone. The “Active Ingredients” panel is the way to tell the difference.
4. What’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?
Mineral (physical) sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active filter. Chemical sunscreens use filters such as avobenzone or octinoxate instead. Chemical sunscreens don’t contain titanium dioxide, but this directory focuses on zinc-oxide-only mineral options.
5. Why do some sunscreens use both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide?
Combining the two minerals can let a brand use less of each while keeping broad-spectrum coverage, and can reduce the white cast. For a titanium dioxide–free option, look for zinc oxide listed on its own in the Active Ingredients panel.
