Does your little girl love playing with your makeup? Good thing non-toxic makeup is a real thing now!! But how safe are the kids' makeup kits out there?? đ¤
I remember reading an article about a 3-year-old girl from Illinois who got hospitalized with severe blisters after playing with a childrenâs toy makeup kit which was supposedly ânon-toxicâ. However, she found later that there were six different chemicals that are commonly known to cause an allergic reaction in this makeup kit and her daughter was allergic to them.Â

While researching non-toxic kids makeup kits I found so many that claim to be non-toxic but are still full of harmful chemicals and ALL of them have titanium dioxide in them. Yikes!! đ These toxic chemicals can lead to serious long-term health problems such as endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity or cancer.Â
Our kids' skin is also more vulnerable when they are exposed to toxic chemicals. A childâs skin is thinner and has a decreased barrier function as compared to adults. The skinâs barrier function refers to its ability to keep moisture in and damaging elements out âand childrenâs skin is less able to defend itself against irritantsâ.
And if you think a little lip gloss or blusher is harmless, think again. Makeup can lead to dermatitis of the skin and lips, causing redness, itch and flaking. Children also absorb more through the skin as they have a higher surface to volume ratio. As such, they can react even when small amounts of an irritant is applied.
Toxic Ingredients You Need To Watch Out For
Apart from the Dirty Dozen you need to avoid in your childrenâs makeup, here are other toxic ingredients you need to watch out for.Â
A study was done by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics coalition, a project of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners. Toxic chemicals such as ethylbenzene (possible carcinogen), styrene (possible carcinogen), toluene (reproductive toxicant), vinyl acetate (possible carcinogen) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were found in kids makeup products and nail polish. Kids makeup purchased for testing were from Target, Toys R Us and Dollar General and brand names included Disney, Hersheyâs and Minions. Here are some of the toxic chemicals that were found in the kids makeup products.Â
