Choosing safe makeup is a must for pregnancy and breastfeeding because what we put on our skin affects our health.

The cosmetics we slather on our skin everyday, can make their way into our bloodstream, reaching our most vulnerable organs. And considering the lack of regulation in the beauty industry, it’s hard to find truly safe makeup (as there is so much ‘cleanwashing’).

But first, Why do you need to switch to Safer Cosmetics while Pregnant and Breastfeeding?

In 2005, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) published a study that found toxic chemicals in the umbilical cord bloodof newborn babies.

“The umbilical cord carries not only the building blocks of life; but also a steady stream of  industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides that cross the placenta as readily as residues from cigarettes and alcohol. This is the human “body burden” - the pollution in people that permeates everyone in the world, including babies in the womb.”

  • Environmental Working Group, “Body Burden: The Pollution in Newborns”

These findings are really alarming when it comes to cosmetics, because your skin (being the largest organ of your body) absorbs everything it comes in contact with; within seconds the  makeup you apply to your skin can have a direct impact on your baby.

What’s even more sad is that most mainstream makeup brands have been found to contain carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and even dangerous levels of heavy metals.

Safe Cosmetics found that over 61% of lipsticks tested contained lead. And the top 10 lead contaminated lipstick brands included Maybelline, L’Oreal, NARS, Covergirl, Stargazer, Revlon, Sonia Kashuk, Avon, Fashion Fair, and Burt’s Bees. Lancome and MAC were also pretty high up on the list.

Healthy and Safe Makeup for Pregnancy and Nursing

While the safest route for women undergoing pregnancy and nursing is to not wear any makeup at all, and to limit the use of personal care products to an absolute minimum. This may not be realistic for everyone, all the time.

What you can do though is to opt for organic makeup products that are free from harmful toxic chemicals. For a list of ingredients you should look out for, you can refer to The Dirty Dozen: 12 Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Your Makeup.

Ensure that you choose a makeup brand that doesn't use any of these top 12 toxic ingredients.  Also check out a brands certifications, try to use products that have been independently verified safe by bodies such as Certclean, Safe Cosmetics Australia & the EWG.
